The history of Christmas goes back 4000 years. Many of our Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ-child was born. The 12 Days of Christmas, the bright fire, the Julblock, giving of gifts, carnivals (parades) with back and forth, Carolers, while walking from house to house, the holiday celebrations and the church processions singing, all back to the early
Mesopotamians
pursued. Many of these traditions began with the celebration of the new
Mesopotamians
years. The
Mesopotamians
believed in many gods and as their main God - Marduk. Each year, during winter arrived, it was believed that Marduk battle with the monsters of chaos would do. To Marduk in his struggle to support the
Mesopotamians
held a festival for the new year. This was Zagmuk, the New Year 's Festival, which lasted for 12 days. |
